Professor (Rev. Fr) Stan Chu Ilo

Stan Chu Ilo is a Catholic priest from Awgu diocese, Nigeria. He has been a visiting professor at the Institute of African Studies since 2002. He is also a Senior Research Professor of Social Ethics, Catholic Studies, Global Health, and African Studies at the Centre for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University, Chicago, and a Visiting Professor at the John Paul II Institute of Marriage and Family Sciences at the Lateran University, Rome. He is also an Honorary Professor of Religion and Theology at Durham University in England and a member of the Editorial Board and Board of Directors of Concilium International. He was appointed by the Holy See in 2026 to lead a global project on promoting inter-cultural friendship and exchange through the project, “The Church of the Sheaves of the Dicastery for Evangelisation”. He is the founder of the Canadian Samaritans for Africa and the Coordinating Servant of the Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network. Among his most recent books are Church and Development in Africa (2014); A Poor and Merciful Church (2018); Wealth, Health, and Hope in African Christian Religion (2019); Someone Beautiful to God: Finding the Light of Faith in a Wounded World (2020); and Where Is God? An African Theology of Suffering and Smiling (2025). He is also the editor of Handbook of African Catholicism (Orbis Books, 2022) and African Ecological Ethics and Spirituality of Human and Cosmic Flourishing: An African Commentary on Laudato Si’ (Cascade, 2022); Dilexi Te: A Church formed by Love (One Subject, 2026) as well as other forthcoming books: Contested Identities in Catholic Education: Racism, Sexual Diversity and the Journey Toward Inclusion (Cascade Books); How Faith Can Repair the World: African Conversations on Charity, Development and Global Solidarity (Orbis Books).
