Advisory Board / Assessment and Appraisal Committee
The first Advisory Board of the IAS was constituted through an Executive Committee set up in 1967 by the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Eni Njoku. This committee was later renamed the Advisory Board of the IAS. Part of its duties were to advise the Director of the institute on the planning and execution of the research and teaching programmes of the Institute, as well as on staff recruitment, development and conditions of service. The first members of the Executive Committee were:
- Dr. S.N. Nwabara – Chairman and Acting Director of the Institute
- Mr. E.B. Ndem – Department of Sociology/Anthropology
- Dr. D.D. Hartle – Department of History/Archaeology
- Dr. Kalu Ezera – Department of Political Science
- Dr. J.C. Ene – Department of Natural History
- Prof. J.C. Anene – Department of History
- Mr. B.O. Nwabueze – Faculty of Law
The Nigerian Civil War did not allow the Executive Committee to complete their assignment of designing an academic programme for Master of Arts in the institute as approved by the University Governing Council. Many of the academic staff members were displaced while some got missing after the devastating war. After the war, a new Executive Committee was reconstituted in 1970, which redefined the IAS’s present objectives, comprising efforts toward the recovery of the past of the peoples of Africa, dealing with the current social problems, and encouraging and projecting Africans’ living art and culture.
Presently, the Advisory Board of the IAS is referred to as the Independent Unit Assessment and Appraisal Committee, with the function of recruitment and promotion of academic and non-academic staff members of the Institute. The composition of the members of the committee include the following:

In addition to the Independent Unit Assessment and Appraisal Committee, there is the Institute Academic Board, comprising the Director as the Chairman, and all academic staff members with the Institute’s administrative secretary as its secretary. This academic board meets once every two months (bi-monthly) to deliberate on the day-to-day activities of the Institute. The Director is responsible for the daily activities of the Institute, and he or she should report to the academic board during board meetings in order to have the support of members in overseeing and implementing programmes, including the teaching of PhD and MA degrees courses, and decisions related to curriculum development and content.
